About The Poet Preacher

The Poet Preacher is a website about Charles Wesley. Charles was an important figure in the First Great Awakening. Sadly, he has been largely forgotten and remembered only for his hymns.

Charles was much more than a hymnist. His example in prayer, preaching, discipleship, and endurance through suffering (both physical and emotional) are worth remembering, too.

Our Story

I began studying Charles Wesley during a doctoral program I was enrolled in. Up to that point, I was completely unfamiliar with Charles Wesley. Maybe I could have named a hymn or two prior to being assigned to study his life and ministry as part of the requirements for that particular doctoral program.

I am thankful for being required to look into the life of this important and often neglected figure from the First Great Awakening. I am astonished at how little Charles is discussed despite his huge and lasting impact.

I hope you will enjoy getting to know Charles’s life, ministry, and poetry as much as I did.
